Spontaneous Ensemble

Overview: what are we doing?

Improvising, grooving, and listening! We will cultivate a musical vocabulary using sounds that we find individually and collectively. No improvisational experience required! While spontaneous may imply action without thought - improvising is often a practice of meaningful choice-making, supported by listening relationally and situationally. We will converse with and learn about various traditions of improvisation, including jazz and bebop, free improvisation, structured-score improvisation, noise music, field recording, deep listening, and conduction. Ensemble members will have the opportunity to bring in appropriate sound objects from various spaces in their life (home, yard, park, classroom, thrift store) and engage with new sounds and new ways of thinking about sound.
