Deep Listening + Sonic Meditations Workshop

March 7th, 5:30p - 7p

Recurs Monthly!

Join percussionist and vocalist Sophie Chin for a monthly workshop exploring Deep Listening — a philosophy and practice developed by composer-performer Pauline Oliveros.

Deep Listening invites us to expand our awareness of sound:

the sounds around us, the sounds within our bodies, remembered sounds, and even imagined ones. Through guided explorations drawn from Oliveros’ Sonic Meditations (1974), Sophie will lead participants in accessible, embodied practices designed to cultivate presence, curiosity, and connection.

Expect a calm, thoughtful, and gently playful evening of community sound-making using breath, voice, and simple instruments. No prior musical experience is necessary — beginners are warmly encouraged.

Open to late teens and adults (approximately ages 16+).

Participants will work with clave, tone production, foundational tumbao structures, and interlocking ensemble parts. Through guided group playing, we’ll develop timing, consistency, and deep rhythmic awareness — learning how each part supports the larger rhythmic conversation.

In addition to drumming, attention will be given to the cultural context and traditional function of Abakuá music within Afro-Cuban communities.

At the Marimba Roundtable workshop, Dylan Nixon, offers middle and high school percussionists a supportive space to perform solo marimba literature and engage in thoughtful peer discussion.

Each participant will perform a selected work — either an excerpt or a complete piece — followed by guided group conversation focused on interpretation, stylistic choices, phrasing, technique, and musical intention. Students will practice giving and receiving constructive feedback, articulating musical decisions, and recognizing the impact of performance choices.

Participants are welcome to share standard marimba repertoire, original compositions, arrangements, or works-in-progress. Unfinished and newly learned pieces are especially encouraged.
